You should brush your teeth after every meal. Dentists and dental associations recommend this for optimal oral health. Brush teeth every day, as this is the least you should be doing for your dental care routine. These are the best times to floss as well.

You should brush for at least two minutes. Anything shorter means you may not get all of the places where germs and plaque hide. Allow for enough time to give your teeth a thorough brushing when you get up and before bed.

Alcohol-free mouthwashes are ideal for adults older than 50 years. The harshness of the alcohol can burn sensitive, older oral skin. The best thing to do is to use an alcohol free mouthwash that contains some fluoride. Use twice a day.

You should brush shortly after each meal. Food left to fester on your teeth can breed plaque. After you eat, there is a 30 minute window in which you can brush your teeth and avoid the start of plaque buildup. Your chances of getting a toothache will diminish.

Do not use a dirty toothbrush. After you brush, rinse it and let it air dry. Then place it in a holder that separates it from all other toothbrushes and surfaces. Do not keep toothbrushes inside containers to avoid bacteria. Get a new toothbrush if yours looks dirty.

At a minimum, you should floss once daily for good oral health. Use proper flossing techniques to help protect your teeth and gums. Use the floss to dislodge leftover pieces of food that have become stuck in between your teeth. Use a back and forth motion. Take extra care to avoid cutting your gums while you are flossing. Floss carefully in between each tooth.

Your toothbrush should never have hard bristles. Hard bristles can cause gum receding and abrade your gums. You might also damage the enamel on your teeth. All of these factors can cause your teeth to become more sensitive, so use a soft or medium toothbrush.

Regularly clean your teeth and get some whitening strips to get better-looking teeth. Be sure to not keep the strips on for longer than the recommended time. Avoid using the strips too often, or you can cause damage to your teeth.

If you happen to have a tooth or teeth knocked out, don’t throw away the tooth or teeth. Rinse it in warm water to remove any foreign debris. Also, be sure that you leave any tissue intact, and then try to put the tooth back in the socket from which it came out. If you are unable to insert the tooth in its socket, put it in a little container of milk and rush off to the dentist.

Now you have the tools you need to keep your mouth healthy. Taking care of your oral hygiene on a daily basis is very important. Not only will you love to show off your smile, many dental problems can be avoided in the future.
